Two New Family Archives from the Roman Fayum
In this talk, I will introduce two new family archives from the Roman Fayum, the core of which is kept in the British Library. The first archive revolves around a metropolite named Chairemon whose base of operations was the village of Bakchias. He was literate and wealthy enough to perform key liturgies, such as operating the local customs station and taking on the post of village notary for a year. The other archive belonged to the family of an auxiliary cavalryman named C. Iulius Diogenes from Philadelphia. The most interesting texts are a pair of letters sent by Diogenes mentioning a trip from Berenike back to the valley, an abusive new *magister* (drill instructor?), and several slaves/servants, including a *galearius* (a groom for his horse), who was paid a monthly salary.
